Can service-oriented staff really sell?
In the few years that I’ve been involved in fiVISION we have been interested in helping our credit union clients get better at cross selling. We even have some products that address this goal specifically … but, I have to say that there are some really different philosophical approaches to selling out there. Most of these discussions rotate around having staff - who are traditionally service oriented - become super sellers. Does it work?

We talk about real-time system interfaces in the financial services world. But if you want to look at a real real-time application you ought to take a look at the timing and scoring applications in Indycar racing!

Many times the emphasis and trends in the credit union industry focuses on 'cross selling' and 'up selling' instead of boring old 'member service' and 'member loyalty'. But isn't that a little bit like focusing on the icing and not the cake?

In a lot of cases clients think a vendor price is way too high. But is it really? Or is a reflection of what is being asked for? Quite often deals that really could have helped both client and vendor die early on the vine because 'there is not enough budget' or 'this is too big a project'. Perhaps thinking about framing our discussions in light of 'musts' and 'wants' would be beneficial. It would certainly be refreshing.

“Blessings? What blessings? Holy cow, we’re just glad we survived.” This is what you hear when you talk with both credit unions and their vendor community – but what is actually happening in many corners of the industry is really pretty encouraging.
